Chen’s consistent dedication to art for over a decade has turned creation into a way of life. She strives to integrate traditional Chinese culture into contemporary art through her painting. In Chinese art history, scholars/artists used painting and calligraphy to convey their life wisdom and emotions, often described as "expressing aspirations through objects" and "finding solace in nature." Her series "Ancient Trees in Bloom" uses robust tree trunks and branches, symbolizing Chinese philosophical wisdom: only with deep and strong roots can one withstand storms and remain evergreen. This reflects the resilience of Chinese culture, the only ancient civilization among the four great ancient civilizations to endure to this day due to its deep foundations and vitality.

The "Mountains and Rivers of the Mind" series explores interpretations of the hexagrams in the I Ching (Book of Changes) using mixed media. Drawing from elements of traditional Chinese green landscape painting and techniques like ink splashing, Tian Chen combines Chinese painting language with contemporary materials. She seeks to find a unique, relevant presence for Chinese culture today, emphasizing the concept of "calligraphy and painting sharing the same origin."

Chen is inspired by ancient Chinese art philosophies, such as Jing Hao's notion of depicting landscapes not directly but through the impressions they leave on the artist's mind. Tian Chen travels extensively across China, visiting iconic landscapes such as Mount Everest, Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon, Namcha Barwa, Dunhuang, Qinghai Lake, and Qilian Mountains, using these journeys to enrich her creative vocabulary. Her "Ancient Trees in Bloom" series was inspired by a snowstorm in Sichuan that left her stranded in a hidden valley filled with ancient trees, untouched and majestic. Their resilience against harsh weather moved her deeply, inspiring this series that celebrates the tenacity of life.
